John Walter Skeldon
16/04/2024
We received the following from Steve Skeldon, John Skeldon's son informing us of his passing.

It is with sadness that I would like to report the death of my father, John Walter Skeldon, on February 3rd 2024. Dad loved his Tettenhall College days and was an avid cricketer, rugby player and footballer during his years as a pupil. He lived on Henwood Road, so school was literally a short run up the slope and retained long standing friendships with other Old Tettenhallians, including people such as Andrew Rutherford and often talked about his time at the College (he still had his cap when he died).
Peter Whitehouse

We have sad news about the passing of Peter Whitehouse, who lived in Swallowdale, Wightwick, Wolverhampton.

From his school friend Tim Hughes:
"Me and Pete started TC on the same day back in I think 1967 and left in 1973/1974. Young house in lower school and I think Shaw house in upper school. Pete went into the family business, Whitehouse Electrical and retired about three years ago. He was an avid rugby player having played for Wolverhampton. Pete was diagnosed with throat cancer last year and finally lost his battle on Friday 15th March."
John Humphries

An announcement from Club Secretary Stephen Corns.

Tim Rowe has informed me that his very good friend John Humphries sadly passed away on 14th March. Like Tim (and me) John was in Nicholson House and boarded at the College from 1955 until leaving in 1961. Tim and John have remained firm friends ever since, and each was Best Man at the other's wedding. Cyril Rushton, who died last year, was an usher at both weddings.
Attached is a photo of the 1959 Rugby XV (I'm not sure if it was the 1st XV of the day) with Tim and John standing in the back row 2nd and 3rd from the left. (Another committee member Roddy Seivewright is in the middle row, 4th from the left).

On leaving TC John joined the Police Force in Rugeley where he played for Staffordshire Police Rugby Team. Some time later John decided to become a teacher and went to teachers' training college - he eventually became a Deputy Headmaster at a Primary School in Stafford.

John always had a keen interest in motor racing to such an extent that he was considered a world authority on the sport and was contacted by many people around the globe seeking information from his broad knowledge on the subject.
John and Cyril Rushton loved to travel, visiting many countries namely Australia, Canada, USA, Singapore and all around Europe.

Tim says that in all the years he knew John they never had a cross word, he was great company, true to his many friends and humorous. He will be missed by many and remembered by all who knew him, a great man.

John's funeral will be held on 18th April at 1 pm at Stafford Crematorium, Tixall Road, Stafford ST18 0XZ and afterwards at Stafford Rugby Club, Blackberry Lane, Stafford ST16 2TT.
Regards. Stephen

Dear Sir or Madam

It is with much regret that I write to let you know that my father Michael Neil Gavins died peacefully last Friday 23rd February attended by his sister Susan and me. He was 89.

He loved his time teaching at Tettenhall College in the sixties - under Mr Field-Hyde. It was whilst he was teaching at Tettenhall that he won his England rugby cap - 1961 vs Wales

We will be holding a memorial service in Uppingham, Leicestershire later in the year.

Best regards

David Gavins
Jack Carey

From a Facebook message.

I am saddened to let you all know the passing of Jack Carey on the 18th January 2024.
Jack joined TC in lower school and left after finishing Year 11 in 2011. He had just celebrated his 31st birthday in November and had been unwell with cystic fibrosis.
Despite spending his life fighting this awful illness, he was always charismatic, positive, funny, witty and smart. His kind and humorous charm created so many lovely memories for his fellow classmates and those who had the pleasure of teaching Jack - he will be greatly missed.
Funeral details are to be confirmed on the Old Tettenhallians FB group.

Our deepest sympathies go out to Jack's family and friends.
