TC’s Windrush connection
Thursday 29 June 2023
Last Thursday (22 June) was Windrush Day, which celebrates the arrival of the Empire Windrush into Tilbury Docks, Essex, in 1948. It's estimated that the ship carried over 1,000 African-Caribbean migrants, who came to the UK to help rebuild its economy after World War II.

Windrush Day celebrates the immense contribution and legacy of these people,

75 years later, Wolverhampton-based Delisser Bernard is one of only 10 of the original surviving migrants, and is grandfather to Scott and Brett Bernard, who attended TC. Granddaughter-in-law, Emma Bernard, is a Teaching Assistant in our Prep School.

The photo shows four generations of the Bernard family.

To commemorate this special anniversary, Mr Bernard appeared in a documentary last week alongside the remaining nine original migrants, where they met the King and had their portraits painted.
